Mela Butcher began teaching yoga in 1980. The daughter of Yogis, and raised in the Self Realization tradition, Mela finished her two year Kriya training in 1978. She was initiated as a Kriyaban in 1980 by her guru Jyotiananda, who, like Paramahansa Yogananda, is in the lineage of Sri Yuketeswar and Babaji.
In addition to her Kriyaban training, Mela is certified in the Iyengar style, having studied with Richard Schactel. Mela is also trained and certified in Yoga Therapy and particularly enjoys working with students who are either new to yoga or who are working through injuries. Mela received her Masters in Science from the University of Washington, specializing in Brain Chemistry and Nervous System Disorders. Mela also completed a five year training in Ayurvedic medicine specializing in internal medicine (Kayachikitsa). She has been practicing Ayurvedic medicine since 1990 and is the Director of the Center for Ayurveda in Los Angeles. She is a frequent lecturer on Yoga and Ayurveda in the U.S. and abroad, and is the author of Everyday Ayurveda. She is also the proud mother of Luke, a third generation Yogi.

Yoga for Times of Anxiety The human energy system is a profoundly subtle and nuanced system. When we experience anxiety or intense stress, our system is signaling to us that it is time to review and adjust the way we are managing our energy. This practice is comprised of poses well known for their ability to restore, replenish, and stregthen the nervous and digestive systems - leaving you feeling more focused, a greater sense of calm, and an evenness of the mind and emotions.
Props needed: Blanket or bolster, strap, eyepillow.
